MONDAY

After a weekend like this one, returning to a regular workweek is achier than normal.

But I have to say...

The Lower East Side was doing its best to remind me, as I came home exhausted on Monday night, that Christmas is still in the air and right around the corner.

Can't wait to be with you guys soon!

SUNDAY

On Sunday, we slept in like champions.

I took Mike to my favorite hip coffee shop.

We made burritos for lunch.

I did my final grading for Hunter!

We had to follow through to find out what happened to Manon in the sequel to last night's French movie (one word: comeuppance).

We made cookies for my Hunter class... Mexican hot chocolate snickerdoodles. Highly recommended!

SATURDAY

On Saturday, we had a lovely brunch in Williamsburg with Mike's college friend and his girlfriend, who live in Princeton. We ate at a vegan place called Bliss. Mike and I split a seitan steak sandwich and the vegan french toast. I thought the sandwich was special, but the french toast was average.

Next, the four of us went to check out a comic convention that was in a gym.

It was the best eavesdropping I've had all year. So many slices of fascinating, smart, specialized conversation. I realized I can fall in love with the texture of paper (the man who saw me stroking it adoringly told me it was from France, with understanding in his voice). My favorite people were this amazing pair who gave out yardsticks as their business cards (I took one). I bought (or rather, had Mike buy me) a tote bag that says "Love Me New York" and gives directions for how to fold an origami heart.

I liked it there.

Next Mike and I went to a cool Williamsburg bar to say hi to two other friends that live in that neighborhood.

We were told on the phone that this bar was hosting a brewery event that involved trying a new beer called "Santa's Butt", but instead we tried two other delicious holiday porters with names that weren't quite so memorable. But they were tasty.

Because I was really in the holiday spirit, there was really only one place to go next:

It was fun to be a tourist in my own town, even if it meant being swallowed up by crowds. We accidentally did something clever: a hunt for a bathroom before we saw the tree led us through an underground passageway that spit us out directly UNDER the tree. BAM! There it suddenly was...

It is a famous destination for a reason.

One of the unexpected highlights of this Manhattan adventure was a subway car completely covered in an American Airlines ad. We were transported to all sorts of international locations...

As if the day hadn't been delicious enough already, when we got home the best was yet to come:

Penne with vodka sauce.

Tirimasu (which was supposed to be for Mom's birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom! Enjoy this photo!).

Hot chocolate with vegan marshmallows that Mike brought me as a special treat.

Lastly, we ended the night with Jean de Florette. part 1 of the epic tragedy.

FRIDAY

Friday was a pretty regular workday. I am enjoying teaching my Friday evening yoga class to teachers! I teach it in the basement at school, in a room with fluorescent lights that never turn off. On Friday, four people came.

After work, I went to Union Square. I wandered around the outdoor holiday market for a while. It was charming and put me in the Christmas mood. It was not hard to resist buying things. Most of it was ostentatious, like huge puffy fur hats and meticulously carved wooden boxes.

I felt like a spy while taking these photos:

Then I went to see an unreasonably spooky, chilling movie all about Swan Lake,

which I told you about when I called you right afterwards! It was fun to talk to you. Then I went home, Mike having beat me home by about thirty seconds. We made a delicious quinoa-spinach-peanutbutter-sauce dish. Then we went out for a cocktail at a speakeasy-type joint. When I fell asleep in our drink, it became clear that it was time to go home.

THURSDAY

My NYC holiday weekend started on Thursday night, when Emily and I bought our Christmas tree on Flatbush Avenue!

It is perfect.

We even strung cranberries and popcorn for it:

INTRODUCTION

Dear Mom and Dad,
This photo documentary was not created to taunt you, but to help you get a little taste of the NYC wintertime you were craving but were forced to miss out on... I hope that by the end of it, you feel a little like you participated! While it would have been so fun to have you here, consoling myself that you were not here led to a very fun time. So in a twisted sort of way, I thank you for the inspiration.
